Local SEO
Local SEO in the AI era: your Google Business Profile matters more, not less
With everything moving to AI search, it's tempting to think the old local SEO checklist is obsolete. The opposite happened. AI assistants recommending local businesses lean heavily on the same structured sources classic search used — and the biggest of those is your Google Business Profile. The unglamorous basics now feed two systems at once: the map pack people still use, and the AI answers they're switching to.
Why your profile carries so much weight
An AI engine recommending a plumber needs facts it can trust: real business, real address, open on weekends, actually does water heaters, humans vouch for it. A well-maintained Business Profile is one of the densest, most verified sources of exactly those facts. A thin or inconsistent profile gives the engine nothing to stand on — so it recommends someone else.
The parts that actually move the needle
- Categories — primary and secondary. The single most mechanical ranking factor. "Plumber" as primary, plus every legitimate secondary that applies. Businesses routinely leave these half-filled.
- Services with descriptions. List every service you offer, in the profile's own services section, with a sentence each. This text is machine-readable fact, not marketing.
- NAP consistency. Name, address, phone — identical on your profile, your website, and directories. "Joe's Plumbing" in one place and "Joe's Plumbing & Rooter LLC" in another reads as two different businesses to a machine.
- Reviews you actually respond to. Volume and recency matter, but responses matter too — they're evidence of a business that's alive and accountable. Engines and humans both read them.
- Real photos, current hours. Stock photos and wrong hours are the fastest trust-killers, for both kinds of reader.
The website connection
Your profile and your website corroborate each other. The profile links to the site; the site's schema markup states the same address, hours, and services; the engine cross-checks. When they agree, confidence goes up on both. When they contradict, both are discounted. This is why I set up Business Profile and site schema together — doing one without the other leaves half the value on the table.
Local SEO didn't get replaced by AI. It became the evidence base AI reasons from.
The honest caveat, as always: nobody controls Google's ranking or an AI's answers, and anyone promising "#1 in the map pack" is overpromising. What you control is being complete, consistent, and verifiable — which is precisely the work most competitors skip.
